Circumcision is usually performed on infants for different reasons including religion, culture or health benefits.

There are several studies that suggests that circumcision has medical benefits.

How do I take care of my son post circumcision?

Gomco Aftercare

General care post circumcision

Always change the nappy when dirty and clean the genital area after each bowel motion or urination.

After you clean the baby apply Betadine ointment to the glans penis.

24 hours post circumcision

Bathe your son and gently wash the dressing off the penis. The dressing is not cotton wool. It does not matter if the dressing does not come off. The dressing is absorbable.

First three days

The penis will look swollen for several days. This is normal. Complete healing occurs in 2 weeks.

Potential complications

Bleeding is rare. If there is a blood stain greater than 20 cent coin please call our 24 hour hotline. This number will be given to you on the day of the circumcision.

Infection is rare. If your son develops a fever or his penis becomes more tender than usual please call our 24 hour hotline.

Review

Circumcision Vasectomy Australia will organise a 2 week review with you and your son. This is to ensure the penis has healed as expected and to address any questions you may have.

Still have questions? We've got the answers.

What is male circumcision?

Male circumcision is the removal of excess skin that covers the head of the penis. It is estimated that three billion males are circumcised globally. Male circumcision is performed for three main reasons: medical, religious and as a preventative health measure.

Who should have male circumcision?

This is a very personal question and can only be answered by an individual. The decision should be made by the man who is having the circumcision or the parent of the child. The decision should be based on evidence based information, personal preference, religious and cultural beliefs.

What if my son is greater than 12 months?

Our doctor completes male circumcision for infants that are less than 12 months old.

Whilst it is possible to complete circumcision in boys older than 12 months of age we sincerely believe boys older than 12 months should have a circumcision under general anaesthetic (whilst asleep).

What do I bring on the day of circumcision?

    1. Blanket.
    2. x2 Nappy.
    3. Dummy or pacifier.
    4. Bottle of milk if the child is not breastfed.
    5. Betadine ointment

Will my son feel any pain?

We complete our circumcisions with a dorsal penile nerve block. This essentially puts the pain nerve fibres to sleep for 1 hour ensuring your son feels no pain during the circumcision.

Your son will experience minimal discomfort when we inject the penile nerve fibres with local aneasthetic.

How do I care for the wound?

Care for the wound is simple. Our doctors will run you through aftercare after your son’s circumcision.

In addition to this, we provide all our patients access to our 24 hour hotline to address any concerns they have about their son’s circumcision.

How long does a circumcision procedure take?
