How Do I Take Care Of My Son Post Plastibell Circumcision?

  1. 24 hours after the circumcision you can wash your baby as usual.
  2. Apply Vaseline onto the front of the nappy every nappy change whilst the ring is present. Only do this for 4 days.
  3. The penis will look swollen for several days and may have bruising. This is normal.
  4. The ring is expected to fall off in 5-10 days. It can fall off as early as day 3 in some infants.
  5. Your baby may develop white or yellow spots around the penis. This is normal circumcision healing. If he is not himself or appears unwell at this stage please message us with a photo of the penis.
  6. Complete healing occurs within 2-3 weeks in infants. In older boys complete cosmetic healing can take up to 4 weeks.
  7. Bleeding is rare. If there is a blood stain on the nappy the size of a 50 cent coin, contact us. Occasional small stains of blood on the nappy are common in the first 24 hours.
  8. Signs of infection are:
    1. swelling of the scrotum or the penis with redness around the penis
    2. fever
    3. lethargy
    4. decreased appetite
  9. If concerned about any signs of infection, message our on-call doctor.

When can I bath my child?

After 24 hours.

How often do I apply petroleum jelly (Vaseline)?

Apply this every nappy change for 4 days. Apply it on the nappy.

For older boys who do not wear nappies, apply Vaseline to gauze and place the gauze in between the penis and underwear. Make sure the Vaseline side is facing the penis.

My child has poo/urine on his penis. How can I clean it?

Gently wipe the poo off the penis as per normal.

Is the bruising normal?

Yes. This is from the injections.

When will the swelling reduce?

The swelling will begin to reduce when the ring comes off.

My child’s penis has yellow/white on it?

This is normal. Please send a photo to confirm.

How often should I give my child pain relief?

Every 4-6 hours if required. Do not give him pain relief if he is not in pain. Infants generally do not require pain relief after 24 hours.

For older boys, if Paracetamol and Ibuprofen do not give adequate pain relief you may give your child the prescription drug. This prescription drug can cause constipation and drowsiness.

The day the ring detaches your child may have discomfort. You can give him Paracetamol if he is in pain that day.

When will the Plastibell come off?

In infants the ring is expected to come off by day 10.

In older boys the ring is expected to come off within 2 weeks.

If the ring has not come within the above periods send us a photo informing us of the date of circumcision.

When will my child completely heal?

The final cosmetic outcome is in 2-3 weeks for infants,

For older boys the cosmetic outcome may take up to 4 weeks.
