Adult Circumcision: Nine Facts To Know

If you’re considering undergoing circumcision as an adult, it’s likely that you’ll have some questions. Here, our doctors from Circumcision Vasectomy Australia provide nine facts about the procedure to assist you in making your decision or to feel better prepared.

1. You don’t need a reason, or a referral

There are many reasons that adult males choose to get circumcised, including cosmetic, religious, personal, cultural and medical reasons. Each patient will have their own reason for wanting to undergo the procedure; however, there is no “right” or “correct” reason for wishing to do so.  As such, here at CVA no referral is needed from your GP or other medical professional prior to booking your consultation or procedure.

2. Only local anaesthetic is required

We complete our circumcisions with a dorsal penile nerve block. This means you’ll be awake during the procedure, but your pain nerve fibres will be asleep for up to 12 hours. This means you will feel no pain during the procedure. In fact, you can drive yourself to and from our clinic!

3. The procedure is quick

The circumcision procedure can take 10 minutes to complete. The waiting period after the procedure is also around 20 minutes, so we can ensure that you are safe and feeling okay to return home. A consultation is also required prior, to ensure you are equipped with the facts and you can ask our friendly team any questions you might have. So, overall, you can expect to be at the clinic for 45 minutes on the day of the procedure.

4. There are multiple circumcision methods…

… however here at Circumcision Vasectomy Australia we use the Shang Ring method for adult circumcision. The Shang Ring method is relatively new here in Australia but has been used around the world since 2005. Compared to traditional circumcision, the procedure time is shorter, the complications rates are significantly lower, there is less bleeding and better outcomes cosmetically (due to no stitches).

The Shang Ring method is performed by compressing the foreskin between two rings, which stops blood flow. Then the foreskin is surgically removed.

5. Recovery time is generally quick, but remember to take care

Every body is different, so everyone’s recovery time is different. In any case, you should allow for up to six weeks for your anatomy to be completely healed.

In the first 24 hours after the procedure, it’s important that you do not shower or bathe. In the days following, your penis will look swollen. While this may be understandably alarming, it is a completely normal side effect. Throughout recovery it’s important to keep your genitals clean and dry, and to wear tight fitting underwear to stop unnecessary movement of your penis.

After your circumcision, you’ll have access to the 24-hour aftercare service following the procedure. We’ll make sure to send you all the information and instructions you need so you have a seamless recovery.

Circumcision Vasectomy Australia will organise a 7-10 day review with you. This is to remove the Shang Ring. We will also organise a review 6 weeks post circumcision. This is to ensure the penis has healed as expected and to address any questions you may have

6. There is a short wait before you can resume normal activities

If your job is not physically demanding, you should be able to return to work after 2-3 days after circumcision. If you do have a physically demanding job, we suggest you request lighter duties or rest for 5-7 days before going back to work. Avoid any activity that can put pressure on your penis or scrotum for at least 4 weeks.

Sex and masturbation should be avoided for six weeks following the procedure. This is to allow time for the wound to fully heal and to reduce the risk of infection. If you have a higher risk of acquiring HIV you must refrain from sex for 6 months.

If you talk to your doctor about your lifestyle, they will be able to give you specific instructions to help ease your recovery.

7. You may be eligible for a Medicare rebate

Medicare offers a $218 rebate on circumcisions for medical reasons. This includes preventative health reasons. Please ensure you bring along your Medicare card to your appointment. You can see our full list of fees here, or contact our clinic with any further questions about fees and payment.

8. There are minor risks

As with any surgery, there are risks involved. The general risks with the Shang Ring method are infection and bleeding. Both rates can occur in less than 0.2% of cases. This is less than 1 case per 500 men. For adult circumcision, Shang Ring is the technique with the least amount of risk involved.

9. There are many benefits

Circumcision may reduce the risk of the following conditions:

  • Decreased risk of ulcerative sexually transmitted diseases.
  • Decreased risk of penile cancer.
  • Decreased risk of inflammatory and skin disorders of the foreskin.
  • Decreased risk of getting a HIV infection by up to 60%.
