Circumcision Aftercare

Circumcision Vasectomy Australia

What is circumcision recovery like?

Aftercare and healing can vary depending on the method used (such as Plastibell, Gomco, Shang Ring, ZSR Stapler or Stitches). Some methods require dressings, while others rely mainly on hygiene and monitoring. Healing time may also differ between techniques.

Infants (less than 12 months):
Healing is usually quick, within 7–14days. Mild swelling and a small amount of yellow crusting are normal. Regular nappy changes and petroleum jelly help prevent sticking and promote comfort. An infant may only require one dose of pain killers throughout the recovery.

Young boys (1-12 years):
Recovery generally takes 1–3 weeks. Mild discomfort during movement or urination is common. Keep the area clean and avoid vigorous play to support healing. Pain killers is required for a few days. Some boys begin running around the next day.

Teenagers:
Healing typically takes 3-4 weeks. Swelling, sensitivity, and light spotting may occur. Loose clothing and avoiding sporting activity are important. The method of circumcision has a significant impact on speed and experience of recovery.

Adults:
Healing often takes 4-8 weeks, with swelling sometimes lasting longer. Maintain hygiene and avoid strenuous activity and sexual activity until cleared. The method of circumcision has a significant impact on speed and experience of recovery.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best method of circumcision?

The most suitable circumcision method varies for each patient. Factors such as age, anatomy, and the severity of any medical condition all influence which technique will provide the safest and best outcome. Your doctor will assess your individual needs and recommend the most appropriate circumcision method for you.

The penis is a dirty area. What are the chances of infection post circumcision??

At Circumcision Vasectomy Australia, our post-procedure infection rate is under 1%. This exceptionally low rate is achieved through strict sterile preparation of the surgical site and evidence-based surgical techniques. For patients who are immunocompromised, our doctors may prescribe preventive antibiotics during recovery to further reduce the risk of infection and support safe healing.

When can I return back to work or school?

This depends on the type of circumcision. You can return to work or school as early as three days after the procedure. If you work from home on a computer and have the circumcision done under local anaesthetic, you can even resume work on the same day.

What do I bring on the day of circumcision?

For a young child:

  • x2 Nappy

  • Bottle of milk if the child is not breastfed

For an older child/teenager/adult:

  • Vaseline
  • Nummit cream
