How Do I Look After Myself Post Vasectomy?
- You must have complete rest on the day of the surgery.
- You can shower 24 hours after the procedure but keep the wound as dry as possible.
- You will need to have a sperm test in 3 months. Before then, you must avoid unprotected sexual intercourse.
- After your procedure you may notice light spotting on the first day. This is normal.
- Expect some discomfort for a few days. Take Paracetamol to manage this. Only use Ibuprofen after 2 days if necessary.
- Expect swelling of the scrotum for 1 week. Only use ibuprofen after 1 week if necessary. Apply cold packs to the scrotum the first few days after your vasectomy to minimise swelling.
- It is important you wear tight underwear in the first few days after your vasectomy to minimise swelling.
- Occasionally you may develop bruising. This will go away within 1 week.
- Depending on the type of work you do, you can return to work two days after the procedure. This is the case for office workers. If you work in an office from home you may work the same day as the procedure if you wish.
- If your job involves reaching, stretching or any other physical exertion you may request to be put on light duties for one week. If this is not possible, you will need to take the week off. We can provide you with a medical certificate.
- Avoid contact sports, cycling or heavy lower body lifting for 4 weeks.
- Abstain from sex and masturbation for the first week after the vasectomy. Abstain from vigorous sex for 2 weeks.
- Once you are physically able to have sex use other forms of contraception such as condoms until your 3 months ejaculate test proves you to be infertile.
- Once proven to be infertile you may engage in unprotected sex.
- It’s important to remember that your vasectomy won’t protect you from any sexually transmitted infections (STI). In situations where there may be a risk of acquiring an STI please use a condom.
- Your vasectomy will not impact your sexual performance or ability to ejaculate.
