How Do I Look After Myself Post a ZSR Circumcision?
- After the operation rest at home for 2 days. You may work from home if you work on a desk during this period.
- Keep the dressing in place for a minimum of 4 days. If the dressing is dirty on day 4 you may replace it. If it is relatively clean leave it on till day 7.
- You may shower after 48 hours but keep the wound dry.
- Make sure the penis is upright to minimise swelling.
- The staples usually start to come off from day 10. This can be like a wobbly tooth coming off.
- If the staples are partially loose or hanging you can pull them out or cut the hanging silicone band with clean scissors. Make sure you wipe the scissors with antiseptic solution before cutting the silicone band the staples are attached to.
- Do not have sex or masturbate for 4 weeks.
- If you have pain post circumcision, you may use the medications prescribed to you. It is normal to have painful erections whilst recovering. You may ask your pharmacist for Pseudoephdrine or Phenylephrine tablets to minimise night time erections. This should only be taken at night and only suitable for adults.
- If you develop increased pain, swelling or redness please contact our clinic. We expect you to have increased swelling over the first 3 days.
- Expect to have some droplets of blood around the wound on the first day. If your dressing is soaked in blood please contact us.
- If you experience seriously painful swelling, increasing redness, bruising, fever or discharge/appearance of pus, please contact us.

When can I shower?
You may shower in 48 hours. Do not wet the penis until you remove the dressing.

When do the staples come off?
They begin to fall off day 10. If they are still present in 4 weeks, send a photo and message demonstrating this. We will organise for you to come in for removal of staples.
I have painful erections. What can I do to stop this?
You may take Phenylephrine or Pseudoephedrine to reduce the intensity of erection. Confirm with your pharmacist if this is safe for you. These medications can raise your blood pressure so it is not suitable for men who have high blood pressure.
I have bruising on my penis Is this normal?
Yes, this is normal. This is from the penile injections.
I have yellow forming is this normal?
This is normal. It is a combination of healing skin and dead skin. Please send a photo to confirm. This will be gone by the end of week 3.
My penile glans (tip of penis) is very sensitive. What can I do about it?
You can apply fragrant free moisturiser to the glans penis multiple times per day. You can apply cling wrap over the glans so the underwear does not absorb the moisturiser.
How long do I use the pain killers?
Your first line pain killers are Paracetamol and Ibuprofen. If they are not strong enough, you can use the prescribed medication. Use the pain killers every 4 hours when required. You can use all 3 medications simultaneously. The prescription pain killer can cause constipation and drowsiness. You are unable to drive or use heavy machinery whilst you take the prescription pain killer.
How long must I refrain from sexual activity?
No sex or masturbation for 4 weeks. If you are at higher risk of acquiring HIV (this includes men who have sex with men), you must wear a condemn for 6 months post circumcision. The penis has a high density of HIV receptors.
When do I expect to see the final result?
Complete cosmetic healing occurs at 4 weeks. The younger the male the quicker the healing.
When can I resume sport?
You can resume sport in 3 weeks.
You may resume swimming at a swimming pool when the wound closes up.
When can I return to work?
If you work in the office, you may return in 4 days.
If you are physically active at work (e.g. tradie), you may resume work in 1 week.
